How to Stay Calm When Life Feels Chaotic

Self-regulation is the key to navigating life’s ups and downs with grace and resilience. It’s a skill, and like any skill, it can be learned and strengthened. Let’s explore how you can self-regulate amidst chaos and find peace no matter what’s happening around you.

1. Breathe Your Way Back to Centre

When chaos strikes, your body’s stress response kicks in, your heart races, your breathing quickens, and your mind spirals. The simplest way to self-regulate is to consciously slow your breath. Deep, diaphragmatic breathing sends a signal to your nervous system that it’s safe to relax.

 Example:

One of my clients, a busy mother juggling a business and her children’s activities, felt paralysed when things didn’t go as planned. I taught her a simple breathing technique: inhale for 4 counts, hold for 4 counts, exhale for 8 counts. She now uses this whenever she feels overwhelmed and finds it helps her return to calm within minutes.

 

Try it now: Take a deep breath, and exhale longer than you inhale. Repeat three times and feel your body soften.

 

2. Anchor Yourself with Gratitude

Chaos often makes us focus on what’s going wrong. This narrow focus amplifies stress and makes everything feel worse. Shifting your attention to gratitude helps you anchor in the present and recognise that even amidst chaos, there’s something to be thankful for. 

Example:

A woman in my Self Mastery membership shared how she used gratitude to self-regulate during a financial setback. Each morning, she listed three things she was grateful for, small things like her warm coffee or the sun shining through her window. This practice shifted her energy and allowed her to tackle challenges from a more grounded perspective.

3. Reclaim Control Through Your Self-Concept

 

When the external world feels out of control, the key is to focus on what you can control, your thoughts, emotions, and responses. Self-regulation starts with how you see yourself. Remind yourself: I am calm. I am capable. I can handle this.

 

Example:

A client going through a difficult divorce felt overwhelmed by the emotional chaos around her. Through hypnotherapy, we worked on her self-concept, helping her see herself as resilient and grounded. By repeating affirmations and visualising herself handling each situation with grace, she transformed her reactions and began navigating her challenges with confidence.

 

Your reminder: Repeat to yourself, “I am grounded, no matter what happens.”
